Installing a Quality In-Ground Swimming Pool

    Last updated 1 month ago

As the weather starts to warm up after a long and trying winter, nothing is more refreshing than a dip in an in-ground pool. Build your own in-ground pool by following these steps.

    Decide What You Want

Installing an in-ground pool is a big job, but choosing a fiberglass pool can cut down on installation time. A fiberglass swimming pool comes in one large piece. To install a fiberglass pool, you simply need to dig a hole fitted to your new pool and lower it in. If you do choose a traditional in-ground pool, installation will take much longer.

    Plumb It

Once you have decided what type of in-ground swimming pool you want, call a plumber. An experienced plumber will be able to run all of the proper lines to the site of the new pool so that you can start filling it in no time.

    Accessories

How will you accessorize your new pool once it is installed? Do you want to have stepladders by which you can get in and out of the pool, or would you rather have two sets of stairs at either end? There is a multitude of decisions you can make about outfitting your pool. Underwater lights will make your pool suited for nighttime swimming, and a diving board will give you a little bit of extra entertainment. Make sure to construct a fence around your pool—in some places this is mandated by law, but it’s always a good idea.

The Importance of Clear Pool Water

    Understanding Your Pool Water Clarity

Nobody likes to swim in cloudy water; but without dedicated and proper pool maintenance, it is an inevitable byproduct of pool ownership. If you are wondering why your pool water is cloudy and what you can do to fix it, the information provided in this article can help you clear things up.

    What Cloudy Water Means

Cloudy water most likely means that your pool’s chemical balance is off. In addition to being a generally unpleasant experience, swimming in cloudy pool water can expose your body to unhealthy levels of chemicals and harmful bacteria.

Reasons Your Pool Water Could Be Cloudy

Several factors play a role in maintaining a healthy chemical balance in an in-ground swimming pool. If your pool’s chemical balance is off, it may be because of a variety of factors, including:

    • The pH level is too high or too low.
    • It is not properly chlorinated.
    • The total alkalinity is too high.
    • Its algae content is too high.
    • There is an abundance of dissolved solids (common in high-traffic pools).
    • It is not properly filtrated.

    How to Clear Cloudy Water

To best improve your chances of having crystal clear pool water quickly, take the following steps:

    1. Balance your pool pH level, using test strips and a pH balancer.
    2. Sanitize your pool with swimming pool manufacturer-recommended sanitation tablets.
    3. Shock your pool water with a super-chlorination or chlorine-free pool shocking treatment kit.
    4. Use an algaecide to prevent the growth of algae in your fiberglass swimming pool.

The Benefits of Using a DE Filter to Keep Your Pool Sparkling Clean

    Last updated 1 month ago

Diatomaceous earth is a natural way to filter your in-ground fiberglass swimming pool water, enhancing clarity and offering one of the most tried-and-true filtration methods available today. Composed of fossilized sea organisms called diatoms, this material can be concentrated and formed into the elements of a filtration system.

    How DE Filters Work

Paired with quality pool equipment, a diatomaceous earth filter operates similarly to sand filters, but takes the process further. The diatomaceous material is full of microscopic openings that allow water to pass through but catch particles that negatively impact water clarity. Because these openings are organic and varied, DE filters can be more effective than sand by catching various sizes of free-floating particulate matter. As the filter operates, it gains efficiency, scrubbing the water that passes through even more thoroughly.

The filter media, being the diatomaceous material, can be cleaned through backwashing, and will require a thorough cleaning once a year for prime operation. A recharge or adding new diatomaceous earth will give your filter fresh capacity to clean your in-ground pool’s water.

    Proper DE Filter Maintenance

Aside from cleaning and recharging a diatomaceous earth filter at least once per year, you should familiarize yourself with the filter elements or cartridges. Tears in cartridge or element covers can release diatomaceous material into your water. This won’t harm your water or your fiberglass pool, but it can accumulate at the bottom. Always handle your filter elements or cartridges carefully, and ask your in-ground pool installer for tips on caring for your DE filter.

When you choose to purchase a diatomaceous earth filter, choose a quality brand that offers efficient flow and ease of maintenance. Your in-ground pool installer can help you find the perfect filter for your pool or spa.
